Place has always been an important ingredient in achieving mindfulness—the state of peaceful harmony that permits us to see our surroundings calmly, live in the moment, and let petty distractions fade out on their own. It’s why monks sought mountaintops and saints the sere desert. It’s why we seek remote places of natural beauty, lush or harsh, when we seek to get away from it all.

Tres Santos has been designed to be just such a place, one that doesn’t just invite but induces downshifting: the first step in achieving mindfulness. It starts with the diamond-clear light and the ocean-blue sky. Tres Santos has incorporated fine touches designed to underscore the harmony, such as aligning the Beach Community’s main street with the summer solstice.

Above all, there’s the freedom to immerse yourself in a lifestyle geared toward freeing you. The organic farm and market ground your diet, and activities offer release from the world behind you. Like mountain biking from Town Farm down to the beach and then shifting into low gear to get to the yoga platform several hundred feet above the old cannery for an hour of practice. Learn to surf from Tres Santos’ instructor, or go out with the fishermen from Punta Lobos Beach and bring back dinner. The active life leads to calm.
